Panther boys nip Angola

Prairie Heights climbed to 5-2 in the NECC boys basketball standings with victories this past weekend over Fremont and Angola.

A 7-0 run to close the game earned the Panthers a 56-52 triumph over Fremont Friday night in Brushy Prairie. Jacob Heller’s three-point play put hosts ahead to stay, 54-52. After a Fremont miss, Austin Beiswanger canned a couple of clinching free throws in the waning seconds.

Heller finished with 22 points to lead all scorers. Austin Penick chipped in 15 markers to the Panther cause and Beiswanger wound up with 10.

Tyler Metzger led a trio of Fremont players in double figures with 17 points. Scoring 13 was Wade Regadanz and Logan Miller had 11.

Coach Greg Holmes’ Panthers made the short trip east on U.S. 20 to Angola Saturday night. Prairie Heights built a nine-point lead midway through the fourth quarter, then had to hold off a furious Hornet rally to take home a 49-43 triumph.

Two free throws by Penick with just under four minutes left in regulation time put the Panthers ahead, 44-35. But a pair of costly turnovers and baskets by Hornets Jake Honer, Hunter Kohart, Robby Honer and Myles Turner shaved the margin to a single point with 1:11 on the clock.

Moments later, the Panthers committed an over-and-back violation, giving Angola a chance to take the lead. But Craig Nofziger’s runner in the lane rimmed out and was rebounded by Cody Bachelor of Heights. Bachelor calmly stroked in the subsequent free throws, extending the Panther lead to three.

The Hornets turned the ball over on their next possession and Bachelor again sank a pair of charity tosses to give Heights a 48-43 edge with 15 seconds to play.

Three Panthers finished in double figures, led by Bachelor and Beiswanger with 12 apiece. Scoring 11 was Penick.

Jake Honer’s 15 points were high for Angola. Nafziger was next with 11.

Prairie Heights now stands 10-5 overall.
