The Prairie Heights boys basketball team experienced a rough end to 2011 last Thursday and Friday at the Holiday Hoops Tournament played at both Columbia City and Carroll.
Coach Brett Eltzroth’s Panthers lost each of their four games in the event, causing their overall season record to dip to 2-9.
Prairie Heights’ best showing in the tourney actually came in its initial game against East Noble Thursday afternoon. The Panthers rallied to tie the Knights, 46-46 at the end of regulation time. East Noble then put together a 7-2 run in the extra session to claim a 53-48 victory.
T.J. Blair tossed in 17 points to pace the Knights. Ian Dove and Jacob Brown both chipped in 11 markers to the winning attack.
Jacob Heller tallied 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds to top Prairie Heights. Ryan Day added 10 points, Tyler Carbone seven boards and Jackie Owens three assists to the Panther ledger.
A couple of hours later, a weary Panther club stepped onto the court against host Columbia City, which was making its tourney debut. The fresher Eagles flew to a 94-23 triumph.
Derek Hinen led a quintet of Columbia City players in double figures with 18 points. Daniel Woll and Matt Rethlake each knocked down 16 points, while Drew Benedict and Drew Burnsworth netted 14 apiece.
Heller had six points and Dylan Stayner five for the Panthers.
Prairie Heights took on Wawasee in its first of two games Friday. Sparked by 24 points from Jacob Thompson and 13 from Ryndan Aaron, the Warriors pulled away for a 64-38 victory over the Panthers.
Heller again spearheaded the Prairie Heights attack with 13 points and seven rebounds. Woody Riha pitched in eight markers and Carbone nabbed seven caroms.
In their tourney ender, the Panthers came up short to Heritage, 74-42. Four Patriots finished in double digits, led by Mitch Castleman with 17 points.
