The Prairie Heights varsity baseball team ran its season record to 5-0 with wins earlier this week over NECC foes Hamilton and Central Noble.
Monday night in Brushy Prairie, Jacob Heller drove in three runs with a home run and a single, leading the Panthers to an 8-4 victory over Hamilton. Bobby Blum, Quinten Bland and Kyle Burkholder each lined RBI singles for the winners, while Joey Barry poked a couple of hits and stole his 11th base of the campaign.
Bo Murphy went the distance on the mound for Heights. He scattered eight hits, struckout five and walked four.
Kyle Newcomer and Ian Harberson each had two hits for the Marines.
The Panthers traveled to Albion Tuesday night and needed nine innings to subdue a scrappy Central Noble club, 4-2.
Heights trailed, 1-0 entering the top of the seventh. Kyle Burkholder led off the frame with a double, then scored on Heller’s triple. Heller then crossed the plate on the wild pitch.
Central Noble tied the score at 2-all with a run in the bottom of the seventh. After a scoreless eighth, the Panthers rallied for two runs in the ninth. Heller singled home Bland with the go-ahead marker, while Corey Johnson’s sacrifice fly brought in Heller with an insurance tally.
Heller, who relieved starter Johnson on the hill in the seventh, earned the pitching win. Johnson went 6.2 innings, allowing just four hits, striking out seven and walking three.
