One person was killed after the vehicle she was riding in struck a tree west of LaGrange.
According to a report from the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department, a 2005 GMC Yukon driven by John Freiburger, 62, of Ft. Wayne was traveling eastbound on US 20 just west of LaGrange on Feb. 9 when it left the roadway on the north side, went up a small embankment and struck a tree.
Freiburger was trapped in the vehicle. After he was extracted by LaGrange Fire Department personnel, he was taken to Parkview LaGrange Hospital, then later airlifted to Parkview Regional Medical Center for a broken pelvis, a broken hip, broken legs, and several broken ribs.
A passenger in the vehicle, Debra Freiburger, 56, also of Ft. Wayne, died at the scene.
The LaGrange Police Department and Shipshewana Police Department assisted at the scene.
