One dead in Saturday crash

A LaGrange man lost his life after the vehicle he was driving went off the road on CR 600N at CR 250E Saturday night.

According to the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department, Effren Caballero, 25, of LaGrange, was driving on CR 600N around 9:40 p.m. when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole.

Officers arrived at the scene to find Caballero had been ejected from the vehicle. His passenger, Hermosa Murray, 23, of Elkhart was lying on the ground, partially under the vehicle, the report stated.

Conservation officers who arrived at the scene first initiated CPR, but Caballero was pronounced dead at the scene due to massive head injuries.

Howe Fire Department personnel worked to extricate Murray from the vehicle. She was transported via Samaritan helicopter to Parkview Regional Medical Center with possible internal injuries.

Excessive speed was cited as the cause for the crash. Toxicology results are pending the LaGrange County Coroner’s investigation.

Responding to the scene were Indiana Conservation officers, Indiana State Police troopers, LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department deputies, LaGrange County EMS, and the Howe Fire Department.
