Officers respond to hotel rampage re-port

Officers from four separate departments responded to a report of a male subject who was out of control at the Travel Inn on SR 9 north of Howe on March 16.

Officers from LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department, LaGrange Police Department, Indiana State Police, and Shipshewana Police Department were called to the hotel around 8:30 a.m. Friday.

According to the police report, Jake Duane Root of Burr Oak, Mich., used a golf cart he had allegedly stolen to ram two marked police cars that had responded to the call to assist.

After a physical confrontation with officers, Root was taken into custody and transported to Parkview LaGrange Hospital, where he was reportedly assessed and treated for a drug overdose. Root was later transported to Parkview Hospital in Ft. Wayne after his condition worsened.

According to the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department, further investigation revealed that Root was staying at the Travel Inn and had broken into five other rooms. The department report stated that, once in the rooms, Root caused several thousand dollars in damage. When Root was confronted by the hotel manager, Root struck him in the face and stole a golf cart.

Two officers were treated and released from Parkview LaGrange Hospital for minor injuries they received during the scuffle with Root. Two police cars were damaged when Root rammed them with the golf cart.

Root is facing preliminary charges of: Battery, a Class A Misdemeanor; two counts of Battery on a Police Officer, a Class D Felony; one count of Theft, a Class D Felony; Criminal Mischief, a Class D Felony; Resisting Law Enforcement, a Class D Felony; and Possession of Methamphetamine, a Class D Felony.
