O. Dale Smith, 96, Angola, died Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at Betz Nursing Home in Auburn.
He was born August 22, 1916, in Hudson, Ind., to Alvin Francis and Vesta (Stomm) Smith.
He was a farmer for over 25 years and also worked at Ball Brass and Aluminum Foundry in Auburn for 24 years, retiring in 1978. He attended the Corunna United Brethren in Christ Church.
He was married Oct. 1, 1937, at the DeKalb County Fair in Auburn, to Gertrude Imogene Ball. She preceded him in death on April 14, 2006.
Surviving are one son, Alvin H. Smith, Jimmerson Lake; two daughters, Barbara L. Hirschy, Hudson, and Doris A. (Linville) Ritchie, LaGrange; 21 grandchildren, Edward M. Shutt II, Dennis C. Shutt, Jonathon D. (Chrystal) Shutt, Barbara J. (Kevin) Stackhouse, Timothy (Lisa) Smith, Rebecca (Tom) Coath, Tara McKenzie, Karin D. Smith, Jennifer Callan, Don DeLong, Sam DeLong, Wendy (Terry) Spryn, Cathy Jo Todd, Kevin E. Smith Sr., Ronda Smith, Bryan Smith, Dawn (Patrick) Nash, Bob (Sheila) Ritchie, Diana (Tim) Lynn, Susan (Roger) Howe, and Bill (Lynette) Ritchie; 35 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Ora Dale Smith Jr., one daughter, Ruth J. Little, one grandson, James D. DeLong, and one brother, Homer R. Smith.
Services were held Saturday, January 5, at Feller and Clark Funeral Home in Waterloo, Ind., with Pastor Russ Heppler officiating.
Burial is in Fairfield Cemetery, rural Corunna.
