NorthWood scored seven runs in its final two at bats to fend off a pesky Lakeland squad, 7-1 in 3A baseball sectional semifinal action Monday afternoon at Wawasee.
Neither team could dent the scoreboard in the first five innings. The Lakers’ best chance to take the lead came in the fourth, when the first two batters of the frame reached base. However, a runner caught trying to steal third, a ground out and a strikeout ended the threat.
The Panthers finally broke through with four runs in the top of the sixth. The big blow was a two-run double off the top of the left-center field fence by Joshua Miller.
Lakeland got one of the runs back in the sixth when Hunter Sams, who doubled to start the frame, came around on a ground out by Morgan Moore. But NorthWood put the game away with three more tallies in the top of the seventh.
William Kelly collected two of the three Laker hits off winning pitcher Tanner Roberts. Kelly also took the pitching loss, allowing six hits and striking out six in six innings.
NorthWood went on to lose to Tippecanoe Valley, 7-2 in the sectional finale Monday evening. The Vikings, who beat West Noble, 9-2 earlier in the day, advance to the 3A regional at Bellmont this Saturday.
