Northridge used its superior power at the net and service line to deal host Lakeland a 25-23, 25-8, 25-17 defeat Tuesday night in the varsity volleyball season opener for both squads.
Annie Bachman and Morgan Miller led the Lady Raider attack with 10 and eight kills, respectively. Miller also blocked a couple of shots for points and served up five aces, while Bachman added three aces.
Dora Wisolek topped the victors in assists with 14, followed by Miller with 11. Both Hannah Kistler and Miller made 10 digs. Blocking two shots each were Janelle Pettifor and Taylor Coulter.
Nikki Chavez-Fearnow and Becca Wooster led the Lady Lakers in kills with three apiece. Elaine Denney collected six assists and Madison Campbell garnered a dozen digs.
“I thought we played well at times, especially in the first and third games,” commented Lakeland coach Brent Miller. “Northridge did a good job of mixing their hits and serve locations. We need to get some more kills in order to stay close with teams like Northridge.”
Buck Carpenter’s three goals helped lift Westview past Wawasee, 4-0 in the varsity boys soccer opener for both teams Tuesday evening in Emma.
Carpenter netted his initial goal in the 29th minute of the opening half. He chalked up his second and third markers in a three-minute span midway through the second half off assists from Jake Berkey and Jarret Slabach.
Austin Borg put in the other Warrior goal earlier in the second half. Berkey also earned an assist on that play.
Westview keeper Tarin Beachy stopped the lone shot Wawasee could generate against his defense. Wawasee goalie Josh Secor made 10 saves.
