Susan Hughes joined the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer roster as she was sworn in by LaGrange County Superior Judge George Brown Wednesday morning.
Hughes joins other volunteers who are advocates for children who are involved in legal cases that come before the court, such as custody hearings.
Hughes recently moved back to LaGrange County and heard about the organization through a friend. Hughes then met with Kristi Bachman, who heads up the organization in Northeast Indiana. Hughes comes in with a strong background in child issues, having done her master’s thesis on child abuse and neglect. She also started a child neglect and abuse council in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Hughes called the training through the CASA program “wonderful” and knows that she can call upon the staff there to get answers.
Bachman noted that CASA has volunteers from all walks of life. “We use the talents they have to put them where they fit the best,” Bachman said. “We think Susan will be really helpful in various aspects. Her enthusiasm is exciting to see.”
