The Topeka Town Council approved a new monthly fee for the town’s water customers that will start in January of next year.
The rates were passed following a public hearing Monday, at which time no additional comments or questions were brought to the council.
It was noted that the new rate ordinance passed rescinds previous rates passed in June, with the change in the ordinance done to avoid charges from the town’s software vendor.
The new fees will go directly to the water department to replace funds that had previously come from the town’s general fund budget. The money that was appropriated for the water department in the town’s budget will be earmarked for future work, which could include a water tower.
In other business, the council was told that there is an issue with building codes that still allow buildings to be built right up against each other. Town attorney Bill Eberhard told the council that he is working with the other towns in the county to look at and address the problem.
