New Shipshewana pavilion gets go ahead from county

The Trading Place in Shipshewana got site plan approval for a 10,800 square foot open pavilion at the LaGrange County Plan Commission Tuesday evening.

The plan is for a 120 foot wide pavilion to be built east of the Antique Gallery, just off of SR 5.

The structure will be 120 feet deep, with a 60x60 area with restrooms and storage on the back of the pavilion.

The application noted that the building will be used for events, including weddings, antique shows and family gatherings. The location has seen consistent use over the last couple of years for a variety of community events with a temporary tent put in place.

The approval came pending a decision by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), on how to handle the driveways in the area. As of Tuesday, INDOT had not given any indication as to what they might require, noted County Planning Administrator Bob Shanahan.

Other applications approved were:

An application for a furniture shop with showroom, storage and production areas for Lavern Bontrager at 0700 S SR 5, Shipshewana. The application is pending approval on a variance request by the BZA, which will be heard on February 27.

Jay Dee Lehman, 8940 W 450 N, Shipshewana, for an animal feeding operation for a layer barn.

In other business, Shanahan reported to the board that he has had additional discussion with the lawnmower repair shop located on US 20 E concerning overflow storage of his home-based business. Shanahan told the board that the area should be taken care of by the end of March.
