New Haven footballers romps Lakeland

Nishawn Jones rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns in leading New Haven to a 48-8 romp over visiting Lakeland in varsity football last Friday night.

Jones scored twice in the first period on runs of two and 25 yards. His third and final tally came on a 49-yard sprint with 9:17 to go in the second quarter and pushed the host Bulldogs to a 27-0 lead.

Bevin Hall, one of three New Haven players to throw touchdown passes in the game, ran seven yards to paydirt early in the second period. Hall would connect with Bryce Hall on a 28-yard scoring strike with just 28 seconds left in the opening half to extend the Bulldog edge to 41-0 at the intermission.

Vance Shearer and Keshawn Moore also tossed touchdowns. Shearer found Travis Crowe for a 22-yard tally, while Ryan Perkins gathered in a 15-yard aerial from Moore.

After missing his initial PAT try, New Haven kicker T.J. Moeller drilled his final six attempts.

Lakeland avoided a shutout when Brennen Weimer raced 72 yards to the end zone with 2:46 remaining in the fourth quarter. Weimer also tacked on the two-point conversion rush.

Donavan Trotter contributed 90 yards to the New Haven rushing attack that finished the game with 315 yards in all. Shearer was 9-10 through the air for 83 yards. Crowe caught six passes for 64 yards.

Weimer’s late bolt accounted for over half of the 143 total yards the Laker offense could muster against the hard-hitting Bulldog defense. Eli Wallace rushed for 39 yards on seven totes. Karlan Troyer caught a 15-yard pass from Erik Mellinger.

The 0-2 Lakers host county rival Prairie Heights in the annual Milk Can Game contest this Friday. The kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
