NECC Track Meet results

 

Two individuals and a relay team from LaGrange County earned titles during the opening night of the 2013 NECC boys and girls track and field meet Tuesday at Churubusco.

Westview freshmen Grace Hales and Lindon McDonald were the individuals who grabbed blue ribbons. Hales won the girls long jump with a leap of 15-7 feet, 5.5 inches better than her Lady Warrior classmate Jeannie Bontrager, who placed second with a mark of 15-1.5.

McDonald took the boys high jump with a height of 6-2. Juniors Kyler West of Prairie Heights and Tanner Oakley of Lakeland both cleared 6-1 to finish 2-3 in the event.

The Lakeland foursome of senior Mitch Herber and juniors Mishael Theis, Eric Herber and Joseph Trost claimed the 3200-meter relay crown with a time of 8:19.87. Churubusco was second with a clocking of 8:21.60.

Westview finished second behind Fremont (10:01.24) in the girls 3200-meter relay. The Lady Warrior quartet of junior Rachelle Whitaker and sophomores Maddie Jones, Kaitlyn Warren and Kylie Barker completed the race in a time of 10:14.48.

Lakeland junior Evan Garretson scored a runner-up finish in the boys shot put with a toss of 53-8.75. Netting top honors with a throw of 56-2.5 was Austin McClure of Churubusco.

Sophie Brown of Fairfield won the girls pole vault with a record effort of 12-6 feet. Katie Monk of Churubusco was first in the girls discus with a distance of 133-11.

Preliminary heats were conducted in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, the boys 110-meter hurdles and the girls 100-meter hurdles Tuesday. Those finals, along with the remaining events, will take place Friday evening in Turtle Town. Field events are scheduled to start at 5 p.m. with running finals set to commence at 6 p.m.

Lakeland stands atop the boys team standings after three events with 30 points. Westview is second with 22. Through four events in the girls standings, Fairfield holds a 31-30 edge over Westview.
