NECC opening round track action

 

Two Westview entries and one from Lakeland earned event championships Tuesday in the opening round of the NECC track meet at Churubusco.

The Warrior foursome of Kyle Baker, Austin Borg, Jerry Schwartz and Micah Hunsberger ran to victory in the 3200-meter relay. Their time of 8:06.87 was five seconds faster then runner-up Fairfield.

Westview pole vaulter Trey Kennedy won the blue ribbon in his event with a mark of 14-4 feet. Warrior teammate Nate Raber, Prairie Heights’ Zack Shepard and Cameron Kitson of Fairfield all cleared 13-6 with Shepard taking home runner-up honors due to fewer misses. Raber netted third place.

In the long jump, Laker Tim Abbott sailed a distance of 21-1 feet to claim the title. Alex Zolman of Churubusco finished second with a length of 20-3.5.

The night’s other event champion was Churubusco’s Austin McClure, who tossed the discus 165-4 feet to easily best Kyle Ostrander of Fairfield (151-8).

Through four events, Fairfield holds a one-point lead over Westview (35-34) in the team standings. Lakeland is just three points back with 32.

The remaining 12 boys event finals will take place this Friday in Churubusco starting at 5 p.m.

Sabrina Whitaker of Westview brought home an individual blue ribbon from the opening night of the NECC girls track meet Tuesday at Churubusco.

Whitaker prevailed in the high jump with a height of 5-1 feet. Next best with a mark of 4-10 was Sophie Brown of Fairfield.

Two other event winners were decided Tuesday. The Fairfield quartet of Emily Beasley, Kelsie Graber, Taylor Stidham and Brooke Mast cruised to victory in the 3200-meter relay with a time of 10:05.98. Earning second place was the Westview unit of Kylie Barker, Janell Bender, Maddie Jones and Kaitlyn Warren. Their time was 10:12.78.

Heather Monk of Churubusco captured top honors in the shot put with a heave of 42-4 feet. Second place went to Sierra Smith of Fairfield with a toss of 40-0.5.

Fairfield tops the girls team standings through three events with 27 points. Westview is second with 20 and Churubusco third with 18.

The remaining 13 girls events will be decided this Friday night in Churubusco. The meet is slated to start at 5 p.m.
