Mural installed in Howe

Driving through the town of Howe got a little more artsy this week.

Kelly Meredith of Butternut, Wisc., was in town to oversee and complete the installation of a new mural on the side of the Paws and Claws Bookstore building at the corner of SR 120 and Fourth St.

Meredith was contacted by Phil Yunker of Howe after he saw some of her murals in downtown Ligonier. The project was organized with help from the Howe Revitalization Association and the Howe Community Association. Township trustee Tom Smith commissioned the work, with funding coming from the township’s economic development income tax funds.

“The mural is of the old Howe train depot,” Meredith said. Meredith, who has been a muralist full time for the past 10 years, painted the scene on 22 separate panels, which were installed Tuesday and Wednesday. As each panel went up, Meredith worked to touch up the area and to make sure everything was aligned.

The completed mural is 43 ft. wide and 15 ft. tall. The painting took six weeks.
