Mary Reed

Mary Elizabeth Reed, 93 of LaGrange, IN, died, Thursday, June 26, 2014 at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Ft. Wayne, IN.

Mary was born the third child to George and Wilma Griffith on May 25, 1921 in LaGrange, Indiana.

She grew up during the Depression and helped her family run The New Deal Restaurant in downtown LaGrange. She graduated from LaGrange High School in 1939.

On June 25, 1939 Mary and Eldon Reed were married in South Bend. They were happily married for 46 years. He preceded Mary in death on July 7, 1985.

Mary was one of the charter members of the Eta Zeta chapter of Delta Theta Tau Sorority.  She was very proud to be a member and contribute to causes and projects in LaGrange.

When Eldon went off to war Mary went to work at Freeman's in Sturgis to help support the war effort. She also worked for a while for Monroe Walters at his restaurant. For many years Mary prepared lunch for hundreds of students as they progressed through LaGrange School. She then went to the new middle school and ran the kitchen there. She so enjoyed the people she worked with and remained life-long friends with them. She also always enjoyed seeing the kids "all grown up."

Mary kept busy with bridge, sewing, shopping, and doing word puzzles. Always an avid bridge player she enjoyed weekly games with her many friends and bridge clubs. She also enjoyed sewing and making crafts for family and friends.

She often "shopped till she dropped" and didn't hesitate to return something she wasn't sure of as there might be new stock at the store the next week!

Mary amazed everyone with her vitality, strength, and determination. At 93 she was still driving, living on her own, and as she liked to say, "I still have my own teeth." For over 30 years she enjoyed going out going out for Sunday night dinner with "the gang."

Mary was a member of Brighton Chapel.

Mary is survived by her children, daughter Stephanie (Richard Smith) in Montana, and her son Brent (Kathy) in Texas, grandaughters Beth and Kari, two great-grandchildren, a neice and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Kathryn Troxell and a brother, Dennis Griffith.

Mary will be missed by all and her family is extremely appreciative of all of her dear friends and the support they have given her.

Funeral services were held at 10 am on Monday, June 30, 2014 at the Frurip-May Funeral Home, 309 West Michigan St., LaGrange. The Rev. Jeremy Helmuth will be officiating.

Burial is in Greenwood Cemetery, LaGrange, IN.
