Mary McKenzie

Mary Frances McCollum McKenzie, 92, Howe, died Friday, July 8, 2016 at Parkview LaGrange Hospital.

    She was born July 23, 1923, in Santa Anna, Calif., to Virgil Eli and Sara Margaret (Donovan) McCollum.

    She graduated from high school in Minneapolis, Minn., and attended Grinnell College, majoring in art. She was an artist in a number of mediums, receiving many awards for her artwork. She left college in 1944 to enlist in the U.S. Navy., where she was a WAVE working as a cartographer and drawing invasion maps.  She was stationed on Navy Pier in Chicago, Ill., and later in Washington, D.C., where she met her future husband at a USO dance. He was recovering at the Bethesda Naval Hospital after losing his eye in the D-day invasion. After her marriage, she was a homemaker and worked alongside her husband on the family farm east of Brighton. After retiring from farming they spent winters in Sebring, Fla.

    She was married September 7, 1945, in St. John’s Episcopal Church, Church of the Presidents in Washington, D.C., to John Charles McKenzie. He preceded her in death.

    Surviving are one son, Nathan R. (Julie) McKenzie II, Brookston, Ind.; two daughters, Laura (Burvel) Lemings, Wolcottville, and Mary Beth (Edwin) Lemings, LaGrange; 10 grandchildren;  23 great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Bruce McKenzie, Indianapolis, Ind., and Dean McKenzie, Eagan, Minn.; and five sisters-in-law, Mildred Hayes and Lois (Pat) Redmond, both of LaGrange, Margaret (Rich) Sunday, Paulding, Ohio, Sharon McKenzie, Niles, Mich., and Faye (Verl) McKenzie, Bethlehem, Ga.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, four sons, John D., Mark, Brian C., and Grant R., one daughter, Lorna J., one granddaughter, Olivia Bay Lemings, and one brother, David D. McCollum.

    Visitation is noon-2 p.m. Friday, July 15, at Frurip May Funeral Home in LaGrange.

    Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 15, at Frurip May Funeral Home in LaGrange with Reverend Carldean Merrifield officiating.

    Burial will be in Brighton Cemetery.
