Man loses hand in US 20 crash

A Pleasant Lake man lost his left hand in a crash Friday morning on US 20, just west of the CR 600W intersection.

According to the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department, Thomas Houck, 60, told officers he fell asleep at the wheel of his pickup truck. Houck, who was following an eastbound semi, went left of center and collided with a semi driven by Douglas Orcutt, 57, of Earlville, Iowa.

Orcutt told officers that it looked like Houck had pulled out as if to pass the other semi.

Houck’s left hand was amputated in the crash. He was airlifted to Ft. Wayne for treatment.

US 20 was closed for the duration of the investigation by the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana State Police.
