Library News

Here are the events coming up in September for children, teens and adults at the LaGrange County Public Library and its branches in Topeka and Shipshewana.

Toilet paper roll aliens…

Children can come to the Shipshewana Branch Library on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 3 p.m. to make toilet paper roll aliens.

From sweet to scary, children can design any kind of toilet paper roll alien they want.

Children's Story Time…

Children’s Story Time will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesdays beginning September 2 and continuing through October 7 at the Topeka Branch Library. Story Time is open to children ages 1 and older.

Preschoolers will learn about numbers over the next several weeks of Story Time. The books, crafts and songs will be centered around counting.

Genealogy assistance…

Genealogy assistance from the LaGrange County Genealogical Society will be available on September 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. and assistance from the LaGrange County DAR will be available on Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 1-5 p.m., all at the LaGrange County Public Library.

Sewing class…

A sewing class for children ages 5 and up will be held at 3 p.m. on September 3, 10, 17 and 24 at the Topeka Branch Library.

Story Time…

Story Time at the Shipshewana Branch Library will be held at 4 p.m. on September 4 and 18.

Internet Basics…

A class on Internet Basics will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4, at the Topeka Branch Library.

This free internet class is for beginning users. Registration is required by stopping in at the Topeka Branch Library or by calling 260-593-3030. A minimum of three participants are needed to hold this class.

Howe Military tour…

A tour of the Howe Military Academy will be given on Friday, Sept. 5. Meet at the Howe Military Campus, 5755 North SR 9. The tour will begin at 1 p.m. in the Major Merritt Dining Hall.

The historic Howe Military Academy was founded in 1884. Tour highlights will include the John B. Howe Mansion and the beautiful St. James Chapel. Parking is available on the street between the chapel and the parade ground bleachers.

Space is limited. To register, call the LaGrange County Public Library at 260-463-2841 ext. 1030.

Family Movie Night…

Family Movie Night will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, at the Topeka Branch Library.

Families will love the movie "Bridge to Terabithia," an exhilarating and heartwarming adventure about the power of imagination and the magic of friendship.

Story Time…

Story Time will be held on Tuesdays, Sept. 9, 16, 23 and 30 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the LaGrange County Public Library.

The Alphabet Craze spreads through Story Time in September! Children will have lots of fun with letters of the alphabet.

Lego Club…

Lego Club will meet at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Shipshewana Branch Library.

Movie of the Month…

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” will be shown at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, at the LaGrange County Public Library. In the movie, Captain America struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and battles a new threat from old history: the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier.

The movie is rated PG-13 and runs 136 minutes. Children under age 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The library will provide free popcorn!

Second Saturday Book Club…

The Second Saturday Book Club will meet at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, in the LaGrange County Public Library.

Read Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, the stop by for the Second Saturday Book Club to discuss.

Wonderland Card Necklace…

Saturday September 13 at 1:00 p.m.

Topeka Branch Library

We don't have any rabbit holes, but you can still get a piece of Wonderland by making an awesome Card Necklace.

Scrapbooking Fun…

Monday, September 15 at 6:00 p.m.

LaGrange County Public Library

Lucy Fearnow, owner of Moments to Milestones scrapbooking store, will teach kids how to design their own 8.5 X 11 scrapbook page. Children can choose their theme, either "Back to School" or "Fall". Materials are provided, but children are welcome to bring a couple of photos if they'd like to use them on their page. This program is open to kids ages 7 through 12.

Defend your freedom to read during Banned Books Week, September 21 - 27. With Blackout Poetry, you choose which words to censor, and the ones that remain create your own unique poem.

Windows 8 Basics…

Tuesday, September 23 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

LaGrange County Public Library

Instructor Mike Bodenhafer of PMC Computers & Surveillance will teach you the basics of Windows 8. The class will be followed by a question and answer period, so come prepared to ask, listen, and learn! If you have a portable Windows 8 device, such as a laptop, tablet, or smartphone, please bring it with you to enhance your learning experience. Please note that a $10 deposit is required to reserve a place in this class. The deposit will be refunded to you at the class (if you don’t attend, and don’t cancel, the deposit will be considered a donation to the library). Please register at the LaGrange County Public Library’s Adult Services Desk. A minimum of seven participants are required for this class.

Stock your at-home library with some great buys at our book sale. The bargains are incredible...everything is just a quarter! All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Library, which support the LaGrange County Public Library by providing funds for Summer Reading, craft activities for children and teens, care of the library pets and more.

Art Club…

Thursday, September 25 at 6:00 p.m.

LaGrange County Public Library

1st grade and up. This activity is for kids who want to learn various techniques in drawing, painting, etc. Kids will learn one art technique and then be allowed to create any artistic piece they choose. We are hoping this will be a monthly activity with the kids learning a different technique each month.
