Holiday closing…

    All branches of the LaGrange County Public Library will be closed on Thursday, July 4, in celebration of Independence Day.

Adult summer reading program…

    For every three books read between June 3 and July 27, participants can fill out an entry form for a grand prize drawing. Enter for a chance to win a Capresso four-cup espresso and cappuccino machine or a KitchenArt Select-a-Spice auto-measure spice rack.

    Last day to turn in entry forms is July 27.

Second Saturday Book Club…

    The Second Saturday Book Club will meet at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, at the LaGrange County Public Library on Spring St. in LaGrange.

    This month, the book of discussion is Rocket Boys by Homer H. Hickam, an American coming of age memoir set in a coal town at the dawn of the 1960s.

Genealogy assistance…

    Volunteers from the LaGrange County Genealogical Society are available every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in the genealogy department at the LaGrange County Public Library to help the public with family history questions and challenges.

Rock Walk…

    Join Naturalist Scott Beam for some urban geology at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 19, at the LaGrange Library.

    Some of the most interesting rocks in LaGrange are in the walls and floors and yards of buildings in downtown LaGrange. Beam will lead a gentle walking tour and point out the fascinating natural objects that most of us take for granted.

   This is a free educational program for adults and children ages 8 and up. Learn more about the world – and the town – around you! Registration is appreciated but not required.

Drive-yourself tours…

    Tour the Elkhart County Courthouse at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 11. Meet at the main entrance of the Elkhart County Courthouse, 101 N. Main St. in Goshen. Tour participants must pass through security, including a metal detector.

    Tour the LaGrange County Courthouse at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 18. Meet at the courthouse gazebo, 105 N. Detroit St. in LaGrange.

    Registration for either of these free tours is required by stopping in at the LaGrange County Public Library or call 260-463-2841 ext. 1030.

Motorcoach trips…

The LaGrange County Public Library is sponsoring a tour of Michigan delights in August.

There is a motorcoach trip planned for Saturday, Aug. 17, to visit the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids, Mich., the Zazios Italian Restaurant, Kalamazoo, Mich., and the Horrocks Farm Market in Battle Creek, Mich.


Those taking the trip will have the opportunity to experience a tram ride through the Sculpture Park, eat lunch at the Taste of the Gardens Café, explore the exquisite gardens, savor a cioccolato tasting at the Italian restaurant, and shop for fresh produce, cheese, wine, deli items, flowers, and unique gifts at the farm market.

The LaGrange County Public Library and the LaGrange County Indiana Genealogical Society are offering a genealogy and sightseeing trip to Washington, D.C. Oct. 21-25.

Travel via motorcoach to our nation’s capital, where genealogists will have two full days to do research. Non-genealogists will have the option to explore the many free museums, memorials, and historic sites instead. Participants can spend the next two days doing genealogy research or sightseeing or split time between the two.

On the itinerary is travel through the beautiful Allegheny Mountains to Gettysburg, Penn., a tour of Gettysburg Battlefield with a special guide, a visit to Arlington National Cemetery to see the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Kennedy graves, and Arlington House, and a seafood buffet at a restaurant on the Potomac River, followed by a tour of the memorials. There will also be a visit to the Flight 93 crash site, where a memorial is being constructed to honor the “hero flight” of 9/11. Participants can also visit the Quecreek Mine Rescue Memorial, which commemorates the miraculous rescue of nine trapped miners.
