With trick-or-treaters swirling around outside, it was a nice treat for the LaGrange County Library Board Wednesday night as they hired a new library director.
The board approved hiring Diane Randall, who currently serves as the director at the Vicksburg (Mich.) District Library. Randall will start her new job in LaGrange on Dec. 3.
Currently library director Mary Hooley announced her retirement earlier this summer. Hooley’s last day will be Friday, Nov. 2.
Randall previously served as the Reader’s Services Librarian for the Kalamazoo Public Library. Randall said Thursday that she is looking forward to working in LaGrange County as it will bring her back closer to family. Originally from Ft. Wayne, Randall received her undergraduate and Master’s of Library Science degrees from Indiana University.
“This is an exciting, challenging position,” Randall said of her new post. “I’m looking forward to working in the community. It is a wonderful library system that has been very forward thinking.”
Initially, a new director was expected to begin after the first of the year, but Randall agreed to move that timeline up to December. Hooley, along with Assistant Director Michelle Blank, have both agreed to take extra time to help Randall start her job.
“I’m taking all positive memories with me when I leave,” Hooley told the board Wednesday. She acknowledged that during her time as director there had been a lot of major changes. “But those changes took a lot of people to make it happen,” she said.
