Letter To The Editor - ARK

Margaret C. Malone

Ark Animal Rescue

and Adoption, Inc.

To the Editor:

Even though I stepped down as executive director of Ark Animal Rescue and Adoption, Inc. as of the end of 2012, I am still very much involved. I’m still on the board and am serving as manager of the Ark Paws and Claws Bookstore in Howe.

Much has happened since Ark was started in 2005. In April 2012 Ark assumed responsibility for the LaGrange County Animal Shelter and it became the Ark Animal Sanctuary with the responsibility for animal control in the county and maintaining the facility. Brian and Sandra Cochran are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With their two part-time employees and various volunteers they manage to pick up, feed, evaluate, medicate, alter and find homes for orphan animals, plus they are keeping the facility clean.

If you haven’t visited the sanctuary you should plan a visit there. We are having an Open House from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, July 20. The sanctuary is located at 0530E 300S in LaGrange. You will be pleasantly surprised and you just might take home a new family member. There are a number of free cats that have been spayed or neutered who will be available to approved homes. There are also some beautiful, friendly, altered dogs who are waiting for good homes. Pets are good for your health! The phone number at the sanctuary is 260-463-4142.

There are some things the sanctuary needs that you might be able to help with. Currently they need a good “weed whacker,” a vehicle (preferably a van or an SUV large enough to accommodate several crates and animals and which must be in good condition since we can’t afford a lot of repairs), laundry soap and bleach. A lot of laundry soap and bleach are used at the sanctuary.

In the past we have been able to obtain Hill’s Science Diet for the cost of delivery but that has changed and it could cause our food bills to triple. If anyone has any influence with a pet food manufacturer, please let us know. As the old saying goes: “It isn’t always what you know but WHO you know.”

Ark is always in need of volunteers – both at the sanctuary and at the Ark Paws and Claws Bookstore. Both places have volunteer sheets you can fill out. At the bookstore we can use "greeters” to sit at the desk and welcome visitors or you can help sort and put away books. You can choose your hours. If we have more volunteers we can extend our hours to accommodate more people. Currently, the hours at the bookstore are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Things to put on your calendar:

Pick up your Buddy’s Buds book at Ark Paws and Claws Bookstore for a $10 donation.

Open House at Ark Sanctuary on Saturday, July 20 from 1-3 p.m. There will be a guided tour of the sanctuary and refreshments.

Paddle for Pooches at Mongo River Run on Sunday, July 28. East side of bridge on SR 3 in Mongo. Plan to arrive around 2:30 p.m. for a 2- to 2½-hour trip on the Pigeon River with or without your “furkid.” The trip fee goes entirely to Ark Sanctuary. Call 260-336-2574 for reservations. Hot dogs, chips and lemonade will be available after the trip for a donation.

Annual dinner/auction on Sept. 17 at the 4-H Fairgrounds. Dinner again this year by the Blue Gate Restaurant.

With the exception of the four paid employees at the sanctuary, all of Ark’s programs are run entirely by volunteers. None of our officers or board members are paid. We need your help to continue running the sanctuary, the bookstore, the Pet Food Pantry and our spay/neuter assistance program. Donations can be made to Ark, P.O. Box 95, Howe, IN 46746. Thank you!
