Sherry Severson’s Lady Lakers Softball Team started the season with a 13-1 win over the West Noble Chargers in an unscheduled game. The Lakers produced 14 hits, including five doubles and a triple in route to the win.
Due to an unplayable field at Northwood, where the Lakers were scheduled to play, and the fact that Elkhart Christian (the scheduled foe for West Noble) did not have enough players, the Lakers and Chargers picked up the game slot. This will not count as an NECC contest.
Lakeland star pitcher Ashlynn Grubb started the season with 12 strikeouts. She allowed only one earned run and no walks in her 2013 debut. Laken Detweiler turned a stellar performance in her first game as a catcher.
Paige Gust, Jill Mingus and Morgan Myers led the Laker attack with three hits each. Grubb added two hits (including a triple knocking in two runs) and Abby Bustos, Madison Campbell, and Kizzie Trinh all added singles.
The Lady Lakers are off for spring break and will play again April 9 when they travel to Prairie Heights.
