Lakers shine in Indianapolis

Before they retired the Columbia blue and scarlet red, Lauren McKibben and Lexie Myers had one more game in them as Lakers.

The childhood friends represented Lakeland and Northern Indiana in a North vs. South Indiana Elite All-Star Showcase in Indianapolis. The second baseman and catcher stood out at the game when McKibben led off and reached base on an error and was driven in by a Myers double to put the North team on the board for the first time in the top of the third inning.

McKibben ended the day going two for four with two runs scored. Myers finished two for three with two RBIs. Their efforts, along with the efforts of the other top players in Northern Indiana, helped lead the North team to an 8-4 victory over the South, after battling back from a two-run deficit early on in the game.

“It felt so awesome to represent for Lakeland one last time,” McKibben commented after the game.

“It just feels good to hang up my Laker jersey with a win. Playing with these extremely talented girls was an honor. Especially getting to see Lauren at second base one last time before we end our careers,” Myers added.

Both girls ended stellar senior campaigns with All-Conference and All-Area honors.

Lauren is the daughter of Carey and Kim McKibben of Wolcottville. She will be attending Purdue University in the fall and plans on studying physical therapy.

Lexie is the daughter of Gary Myers and Michelle Myers, both of Howe. She will be attending Purdue University in the fall to study pharmacy and chemistry.
