Laker Boys outlast Chargers

Lakeland outlasted West Noble, 77-73 in double overtime last Friday night in LaGrange to claim its third NECC boys basketball win in five decisions.

Trailing by four (44-40) entering the final period, the Lakers used a 15-11 surge to tie the Chargers at 55-all. Lakeland held a 64-61 edge in the waning seconds of the first overtime stanza, but Phil Miller’s three-pointer knotted the count at 64. It was one of 10 triples canned by the Chargers.

After splitting the initial 12 points of the second overtime frame, the Lakers took charge with six straight points to go up by six (76-70). Spencer Mortola, whose bucket capped the decisive run, finished with 25 points to lead all scorers.

Jalen King, who sank three of the Lakers 10, three-point baskets, followed Mortola on the winning scorecard with 21 points. Tim Abbott wound up with 16 markers.

Drew Schermerhorn led a trio of West Noble players in double figures with 22 points. Nick Thomas had 17 and Nick Noe 13.

Lakeland stands 4-5 overall.
