Lakeland tracksters win big

The Lakeland boys track team breezed to the team championship in their own invitational meet held last Friday night in LaGrange.

Coach Keith Thompson’s Lakers compiled a score of 227 points, more than double the 112 markers tallied by meet runner-up DeKalb. Angola was third with 64.

Tim Abbott and Evan Garretson accounted for four of the six individual blue ribbons won by Lakeland. Abbott took firsts in the 200-meter dash (22.40) and long jump (21-6.5), while Garretson swept the shot put (50-3.5) and discus (138-5) throws.

Devin Dimos and Manny Theis captured the other two Laker blue ribbons. Dimos prevailed in the 100-meter dash (11.30) and Theis ran past the field in the 400 meters (50.50).

In addition to their six individual victories, the Lakers won all three relay races. Abbott, Dimos, Cory Troyer and Jacob Lichtsinn combined to win the 400-meter relay (43.80).

Theis, Taylor Raatz, Dustin Wolheter and Gavin Troyer formed the triumphant 1600-meter relay unit (3:35.50). Kyle Bowen, Eric Herber, Mitch Herber and Theis linked up to take the 3200-meter relay (8:27.40).

Prairie Heights hurdler Jimmy Maas also had a big night, winning both the 110-meter (14.30) and 300-meter (39.40) races. His time in the 110-meter event set a new school record.

Zack Shepard his Panther teammate in the winner’s circle by placing first in the pole vault (13-6).
