Lakeland softballers nip Eastside

Lauren McKibben’s single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning brought home Carolyn Hershberger with the winning run for Lakeland in a 9-8 triumph over NECC rival Eastside Tuesday night.

Hershberger reached base on a walk. She then advanced to second on a ground out by Abby Bustos and completed the base circuit on McKibben’s liner.

Lakeland jumped to an 8-1 lead after four innings. Jill Mingus drove in three of the Lady Laker runs with a pair of hits, while both Hershberger and Morgan Meyers plated two runs. Lexie Myers doubled twice and both McKibben and Ashlynn Grubb had one two-bagger for the winners.

But Eastside would knot the score at 8-all with a seven-run explosion in the fifth inning. Capping the Lady Blazer rally with a three-run homer was Kerissa Lockwood.

Each team had chances to take the lead in the final innings. Lakeland right fielder Kizzie Trinh cut down an Eastside runner at the plate in the sixth. The Lady Lakers stranded eight base runners in frames 6-9.

Grubb pitched all 10 innings for the Lady Lakers, striking out nine and walking two. Erin Strock, who relieved starter Kelly Singer in the fourth, took the loss for Eastside.

Lakeland improved to 13-9 overall and to 6-2 in league play with the win.
