The Lakeland varsity softball team notched road wins over Central Noble (3-0) and Bethany Christian (17-0) at the end of last week.
Pitching ace Ashlynn Grubb struckout 16 Central Noble batters in recording the 26th shutout of her magnificent Lady Laker career last Thursday. She allowed four hits and walked one.
Lakeland scored all of its runs off Central Noble hurler Haley Duncan in the third inning. Madison Campbell and Karissa Troyer led off the frame with singles, and then were sent home on a double off the bat of Jill Mingus. A Lady Cougar bobble on a hard grounder hit by Paige Gust allowed Mingus to complete the base circuit.
Campbell and Grubb each collected two hits. Darby Roe had two of the four CN safeties.
Coach Sherry Severson’s crew rolled into Goshen on Friday and battered Bethany Christian pitchers for 16 hits, seven of which went for extra bases. Grubb lined three doubles, drove in two runs and scored three times. Mingus went 3-3 with two doubles and three RBI, Ashton Miller ripped a double and two singles, Madison Campbell socked a two-run triple and a single, and Morgan Meyers poked a couple of singles.
Grubb started in the pitcher’s circle for Lakeland, striking out nine of the 10 batters she faced. Gust finished up, whiffing two in two innings.
