It was a momentous weekend for the Lakeland varsity softball team, as it claimed its first NECC regular-season title and successfully defended its Bremen Invitational crown for the fourth straight year.
The Lady Lakers sewed up the league championship last Thursday with a 9-0 whitewashing of Fremont. A three-run double by Paige Gust in the first inning got the Lakeland express rolling. Morgan Meyers would later add a two-run double, while Ashlynn Grubb, Jill Mingus, Madison Campbell and Karissa Troyer all poked RBI singles.
Grubb gave up just two hits, struckout 15 and walked one in notching the win.
Coach Sherry Severson’s squad can cap off an unbeaten NECC slate Tuesday night with a win at Hamilton.
Lakeland blanked Culver Academy, 9-0 in the opening round of the Bremen Invitational Saturday.
Laken Detwiler’s two-run triple fueled a six-run outburst in the fifth. Troyer, Gust, Campbell and Ashton Miller also plated Lakeland runs.
Grubb fired a three-hitter in posting her 29th career shutout. She whiffed 15 and walked one.
The Lady Lakers faced the host Lady Lions in the finals. Trailing 2-1 going into the top of the seventh, Lakeland tallied three times to pull out a 4-3 triumph.
Troyer bashed a one-out double to knock in Miller and Abby Bustos with the tying and go-ahead runs. Mingus then singled home Campbell with a crucial insurance tally.
Bremen narrowed the gap to a single marker in the bottom of the seventh on a triple by Brooke Baker. The Lady Lions got the tying runner on base with one out, but Grubb retired the next two batters to close out the game.
Mingus finished with two hits and two RBI.
Lakeland is 19-4 overall.
