Lakeland upped its NECC softball record to 2-1 Tuesday with an 8-3 victory over host Churubusco.
Laken Detwiler went 3-4 with a double and two RBI to lead the Lady Lakers at the dish. Abby Bustos also drove in two runs with a pair of singles. Madison Campbell, Karyssa Troyer, Ashton Miller and Kristen Wiese all poked singles.
Paige Gust went the distance in the pitcher’s circle for Lakeland. Gust allowed six hits, walked none and struckout one in notching the win.
Mariah Nordorff had a hit and scored both runs for Churubusco.
Coach Sherry Severson’s club traveled to Kendallville Wednesday night for a non-conference matchup with East Noble. The Lady Lakers rallied from an early, 3-0 deficit to edge the Lady Knights, 5-4.
Jaml Jaquay’s two-run double and an RBI single off the bat of Megan Rainy in the second inning put East Noble in front. Lakeland began to chip away at the lead, scoring once in the fourth and twice in the fifth on a two-run double by Wiese.
The Lady Lakers took the lead with two runs in the sixth. Campbell triggered the rally with a double, followed by bunt hits by Troyer, Miller and Bustos.
East Noble tallied in the bottom of the seventh to shave the margin to one. But Lakeland starter Aspen Bond wriggled out of the jam to secure her first varsity win. Bond finished with six strikeouts.
Wiese, Campbell and Jill Mingus each finished with two hits for the Lady Lakers, now 4-3 on the campaign.
