On June 16, Lakeland High School announced post-season softball honors for Ashlynn Grubb, Jill Mingus, and Lakeland Softball Head Coach Sherry Severson.
Senior pitcher Ashlynn Grubb was one of five players recently selected for 1st Team All-State at the District 2 Coaches Meeting in LaVille, Ind. The first Lakeland player to be named 1st Team All-State, Grubb was also named to the Indiana North All-Star team, which will face the Indiana South All-Star team on Saturday, June 22, at the Cherry Tree Complex in Carmel, Ind.
Grubb is a four-time 1st Team All-NECC player. Her impressive career with Lakeland softball helped the team to a school record 22 wins, as well as championships in both the NECC regular season and the NECC tournament.
Grubb finished the season with a 22-2 record on the pitcher’s mound. She holds the following single season and career records: most hits in a season (62); most hits in a career (189); most RBI in a career (99); highest batting average in a season (.549); career extra base hits (65); most pitching wins in a season (22); most wins in a career (72); most strikeouts in a season (317); most strikeouts in a career (1,059, 7th all-time in Indiana); most shutouts in a season (9); most shutouts in a career (30); lowest ERA in a season (.67).
Grubb will be playing softball at Valparaiso University this fall, where she will be majoring in nursing.
The second student award was presented to junior Jill Mingus. Mingus, who played third base, was chosen to play for the North Squad in the Indiana Elite Showcase event on June 16 at Westfield, Ind.
A 1st Team All-NECC selection, Mingus batted .423, had 41 hits, and led the team with 31 RBI. She had a 90 percent fielding percentage at third base this year and tied the school record for home runs with nine.
Head Coach Sherry Severson was chosen as the District 2 Coach of the Year. A 26-year veteran at Lakeland, she was selected by her peers as Coach of the Year at the ICGSA District 2 All-State meeting. It is her first honor of this kind.
District 2, which includes the Ft. Wayne and South Bend areas, named Northridge’s James O’Dell as 4A Coach of the Year, Severson as 3A Coach, LaVille’s Scot Shearer as 2A Coach, and Lakewood Park’s Dave Carnahan as 1A Coach. Severson was then chosen as the district coach of the year.
During her tenure, Severson has led Laker teams to 371 wins, five sectional championships, one regional title, three NECC tournament titles, and one NECC regular season title.
In addition to her Coach of the Year honor, Severson was also chosen to coach the Indiana North Squad at the Indiana North-South All-Star Game on June 22.
The North-South Squad game this Saturday begins at 11 a.m. at the Cherry Tree Complex in Carmel. Severson will serve as head coach, assisted by co-coaches Scot Shearer of Laville and Ginger Britton of Crown Point.
Miss Softball will be chosen between the first and second games.
“I feel both honored and humbled to be chosen to coach the All-Star team,” Severson said. “A lot of credit goes to my players and assistant coaches Mike Bustos and Scott Grubb. Our three seniors, Ashlynn Grubb, Morgan Meyers and Kizzie Trinh picked a team slogan – ‘Teamwork Makes the Dream Work.’ That plain and simply epitomized our group this year. We had a very special pitcher in Ashlynn, but all the girls contributed to our success as a team. I can’t thank them enough for all the great memories I have of the 2013 season.”
