Lakeland sofball team drops doubleheader

DeKalb took both ends of a varsity softball doubleheader from Lakeland last Friday night in Waterloo.

The Lady Barons bunched together four runs in the third inning and held off a late Lady Laker charge to seize game one, 4-2. Morgan Meyers’ single in the sixth inning scored Jill Mingus and Cedi Bowers with the lone Lakeland runs.

Lexie Myers and Kizzie Trinh each lined a pair of hits for the Lady Lakers. Lauren McKibben smashed a double and Karissa Troyer poked a single.

Ashlynn Grubb gave up seven hits and fanned 10 in taking the loss.

In the nightcap, DeKalb broke open a tie game with five runs in the fifth and went on to win an 8-5 decision. A three-run double by Leuis was the big hit for the Lady Barons.

Grubb socked three hits to pace the Lady Laker attack. McKibben and Carolyn Hershberger each had a double and a single, while Hannah Myers and Trinh both singled twice. Knocking in runs were McKibben, Hershberger, Trinh and Troyer.

Holly Eaton and Mingus each pitched in the second game for Lakeland. Eaton, the starter, suffered the loss.
