The Lakeland varsity boys soccer team got its 2012 campaign off to a good start last Thursday night in Garrett by beating the host Railroaders, 3-1.
Alfredo Nieves staked the Lakers to a 2-0 lead with goals in the 11th and 24th minutes. Marco Olivares assisted on Nieves’ second tally.
Just before the half ended, Garrett cut the difference to 2-1 on a boot by Trent Leverenz. Dustin Cunningham then restored Lakeland to a two-goal edge midway through the second half with a marker off an assist by Nick Byler.
Lakeland took 15 shots in the match compared to just six for Garrett. Laker keeper Luis Gutierrez was credited with four saves, while Railroader goalie Kele Jennings had 12 stops
