Lakeland hires new assistant principal at high school

The Lakeland School Board filled several vacancies at Monday’s meeting, including a new assistant principal for the high school.

The board approved a recommendation to hire Chris Wilkins from Viking New Tech in Huntington, Ind. Wilkins was a social studies teacher at Huntington North High School for six years. Prior to that, he was at the La Sierra High School in Riverside, Calif., was employed for two years at White Oak Middle School in Cincinnati, Ohio, and began his teaching career at Greendale Middle School in Lawrenceburg, Ind.

The board also hired Dana Dunham as the new Health/PE teacher at the high school. Dunham had been a permanent substitute at the high school.

Shannon Smallwood and Ben Martin were hired as special education teachers at the middle school.

Leanne Putterill was hired as a special education teacher at Lima-Brighton Elementary.

The board approved two resignations from the high school. Stacey Leahy resigned from the music/band teacher post. Gina Papineau resigned as the English/language arts teacher.

The board approved rolling over the administrative contracts on a 4-2 vote, with Steve Bowen and Carey McKibben voting against the motion.

The board approved rolling over the superintendent’s contract for five years. Board member David Larimer questioned having a five-year contract based on continuing issues with what the state does to districts in regard to certified staffing. He also noted that a five-year contract gave little options to future boards and to taxpayers. The motion passed 4-2 with Larimer and McKibben voting against it.
