Lakeland advanced to the regional round of the IHSAA boys golf state tournament by placing third overall last Friday in the Fairfield sectional played at Black Squirrel Golf Course in Goshen.
Led by Spencer Mortola’s 77, the Lakers finished with a team count of 330, two strokes ahead of Elkhart Central and Concord in the race for the third and final regional team berth. Elkhart Memorial, which won the sectional crown with a score of 327, and runner-up Northridge with a mark of 328 were the other two teams to advance.
Mortola’s up-and-down round included four birdies and three double-bogeys. He carded a 38 on the front nine and a 39 on the back.
Cody Richardson followed Mortola on the Lakeland scorecard with an 81. Jordan Aldrich fired an 84, Isaac Kilgore an 88 and Zac Paxson a 97.
Jeffrey Bradford (75) of Elkhart Central, Zach Hochstedler (77) of Fairfield and Alec Dutkowski (78) of Elkhart Christian advanced to the regional as individuals. Dutkowski defeated Timothy Johnson (78) of Concord in a playoff for the third and final bid.
The regional tournament will take place this Thursday at Orchard Ridge Country Club in Fort Wayne.
