Ashlynn Grubb fired a no-hitter with a school-record 19 strikeouts as Lakeland opened its 2012 softball campaign Monday evening with an 8-0 romp over visiting Wawasee.
The shutout was the 13th of the junior hurler’s career. Grubb also aided her cause at the plate with two hits, including a double, and two RBI.
Carolyn Hershberger collected three hits to pace the Lady Laker attack, while Morgan Meyers and Lauren McKibben each netted two. Lexie Myers drilled a bases-loaded double to trigger a five-run third inning.
Lakeland traveled to Northridge Tuesday night and lost to the powerful Lady Raiders, 7-1. Karissa Troyer plated Jill Mingus in the top of the seventh for the Lady Lakers’ lone run.
Mingus and Lexie Myers both delivered two hits for Lakeland. Grubb ripped a double.
Conner Crist, had two hits and Haley Nixon bashed a double for Northridge, which also benefitted from six Lady Laker fielding errors. Brittany Wingard and Madison Schrock each laced RBI safeties.
Nixon fanned six and walked one in notching the pitching victory. Grubb took the loss, striking out seven and walking two.
