Lakeland footballers crushes Central Noble

Senior quarterback William Kelly passed for three touchdowns and the defense forced seven turnovers to help Lakeland brush aside Central Noble, 51-14 in NECC football action last Friday night in Albion.

On their second offensive play of the game, the Lakers struck paydirt when senior Joel Miller caught a Kelly pass at his own 38 and out raced the Cougar defenders to the end zone to complete a 73-yard touchdown. Senior place-kicker Marco Olivares tacked on the first of his six PAT kicks to give Lakeland a 7-0 lead four minutes into the tilt.

The Lakers missed a field goal on their next possession, but cashed in on their third try when Kelly hit senior Quinten Bender with a five-yard scoring strike. Olivares put Lakeland up 17-0 late in the opening stanza when he drilled a 19-yard field goal.

Kelly’s third and final touchdown toss of the game came midway through the second period and went to senior Hunter Sams. Kelly finished the contest 9-16 passing for 148 yards.

Central Noble cut the halftime difference to 24-7 on a five-yard touchdown sprint by Garren Deck late in the second period. But four Lakeland touchdown runs in the second half – two by sophomore Josh Collyer and one each by Bender and senior Kyle Casper – put the game out of reach.

Six different backs gained yardage for the Lakers, led by Sams with 51 in six totes and Collyer with 44 in eight. Miller snagged three receptions for 93 yards.

Seniors Wyatt Petty and Evan Garretson topped the hard-hitting Lakeland defense with eight and seven tackles, respectively.

Lakeland (3-0) hosts Angola (2-1) this Friday.
