Lakeland football team blanks Angola

A smothering effort by its defense carried Lakeland to a 31-0 thrashing of Angola last Friday night at Laker Field.

Highlighted by a 39-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the second quarter by senior end Wyatt Petty, the Laker defense held the Hornets to just 23 yards of total offense, including a minus-eight yards of rushing. Angola gained four of its six first downs on its first possession of the game, which ended on the Lakeland 20, the Hornets’ deepest penetration into Laker territory of the night.

Petty finished the game with two fumble recoveries and six tackles. Classmates Nick Attkisson and Evan Garretson led the Lakers in stops with eight apiece. Senior cornerback Joel Miller also pounced on an Angola fumble.

The Lakeland offense took the opening kickoff and drove 62 yards in 12 plays for the game’s initial score. Senior quarterback William Kelly found fellow upperclassman Hunter Sams with a five-yard touchdown toss.

Senior slotback Kyle Casper burst into the end zone from five yards out late in the third period to increase the Lakeland advantage to 21-0. Seconds into the final stanza, senior Taylor Raatz took a handoff from Kelly and raced 58 yards to paydirt.

The final points of the night came off the right foot of Laker senior place-kicker Marco Olivares, who drilled a 37-yard field goal with just over four minutes remaining.

Raatz and senior fullback Thomas Roebel led a balanced Lakeland rushing attack with 78 and 56 yards, respectively. Kelly was 7-12 through the air for 33 yards. Sams and senior slotback Quinten Bender each made two receptions.

The win improved Lakeland to 4-0 overall and in the NECC. The Lakers travel to West Noble (1-3) this Friday.
