Lakeland FFA working on school farm plot

While most people were enjoying the lake or hanging with friends and family, the Lakeland FFA was feeling the reality of farm life.

On May 26 Lakeland FFA members went to work on the school farm plot, working ground and then planting soybeans that were donated by Mike Cunningham of Topeka for this year’s fall harvest. Work on the school farm began before May 26 with the Lakeland FFA Farm Committee reaching out to local business Edd’s Supplies to donate the fertilizer that was applied to the field in early May.

The Lakeland FFA works with Dana Miller and Robert Kasten at Archbold Equipment in Topeka to receive a new tractor and corn planter through an educational program offered through Case IH. Lakeland FFA members Clay McCann and Logan Ott worked with Archbold Equipment employees Robert Kasten and Robert Price to set up and calibrate the planter Monday afternoon.

The members proceeded to plant the 19-acre school farm that afternoon, and planted half in 30-inch rows and the other half in 15-inch rows to compare yields and plant growth.
