Lakelandrallied from a 6-0 deficit to nip Fort Wayne Luers, 8-7 in the opening game of a varsity baseball doubleheader this past Saturday in LaGrange.
The Lakers began their rally by scoring a run in the fourth. They drew to within 6-4 with three markers in the fifth, then took an 8-6 lead with four runs in the sixth.
Luers scored a run in the top of the seventh, but Laker reliever William Kelly got the final outs to preserve the win and earn a save.
Hunter Sams drove in three Laker runs with a double and a single. Kelly had two hits and two RBI, Morgan Moore clubbed three hits, including an RBI double, and both Dalton Schmidt and Dustin Cunningham contributed two singles.
Jalen Priestley, who pitched one out in the sixth inning, got credit for the pitching win. Sams worked the first 5.2 frames for the Lakers, striking out three and walking five.
In the nightcap, Luers busted loose for seven runs in the fourth inning en route to an 11-7 victory.
Moore and Cunningham both finished with two hits for the Lakers. Kelly plated two runs with a single.
Alex Pearson, Priestley and Austin Keckler all took turns on the mound for Lakeland with Pearson absorbing the loss.
