Lakeland held off county rival Prairie Heights, 4-2 in varsity boys soccer action Saturday morning in LaGrange.
Hernan Duran, Nick Byler and Dustin Cunningham scored goals in the first 15 minutes of the match, staking the host Lakers to a 3-0 lead. Daniel Nieves and Dylan Gust garnered assists on the Duran and Byler markers, while Cunningham’s tally came on a penalty kick.
The Panthers clawed back to within one (3-2) before halftime on a goals by Darrin Cole and Christian Granados in the 30th and 34th minutes, respectively. Granados set up Cole with a crossing pass then booted home a penalty kick.
Lakeland notched an insurance goal midway through the second half on a shot by Andres Nieves. Cunningham earned an assist on the play.
Prairie Heights keeper Kyle Burkholder totaled 13 saves in the loss. Winning goalie Luis Gutierrez had two stops.
The result improved Lakeland to 4-5 overall and to 3-2 in NECC action, while Prairie Heights dipped to marks of 4-5 and 1-4.
