On April 6 the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department, assisted by the LaGrange City Police and Shipshewana Police Department, responded to a call from a juvenile that her mother was being physically assaulted.
According to the police report, officers were warned of the presence of firearms in the bedroom of the residence where the fight was taking place. Upon arrival at the residence on CR 300N, officers allegedly found the front door partially open. Officers announced their presence and entered after not being able to make contact with anyone in the home. A male later identified as Joseph Emery, 46, of CR 300N was allegedly strangling a female subject. He was arrested without incident.
Upon investigation, it was discovered that Emery had returned home while intoxicated, entered the bedroom and jumped on top of the female subject, who was sleeping with the couple’s five-year-old daughter. Emery then allegedly started assaulting the female subject and the juvenile ran to her older sister’s room, who then called 911.
Emery was taken to the LaGrange County Jail on initial Class D felony charges of domestic battery, intimidation, and strangulation. He is being held without bond until a court appearance.
