LaGrange County resident and group honored by Red Cross

The Indiana-Ohio Region of American Red Cross Blood Services recently hosted its annual recognition luncheon in Ft. Wayne. Many awards were distributed to recognize the outstanding achievements and volunteer service of individuals and businesses in our region.

Madonna Price and Lakeland High School were among those recognized.

Madonna Price received the Outstanding Volunteer Service Award. This award recognizes the countless Red Cross volunteers who serve the community at blood drives, donation centers and local Red Cross chapters.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of the American Red Cross Partnership awards, with Lakeland High School one of the recipients.

The partnership awards recognize the invaluable work of the chapters, hospitals and sponsors that support the Indiana-Ohio Region. Their active role and faithful support in the collection of blood products helped make this year a success.

Sue Keenan has been an advocate of blood donation and getting the students and staff involved in being blood donors by first teaching within her classroom the need for blood and blood products. She educates her students in the types of patients that their blood donation will help and how the blood donation is used. Secondly, Lakeland High School is always willing to add blood drives throughout the school year, which has resulted in adding new first-time donors each and every drive, giving the most students a chance to begin the habit of lifelong donation. Because of the multiple opportunities students are given to donate blood, Lakeland High School had three graduating seniors in the Class of 2011 who reached the milestone of donating 10 times within their high school eligibility years. This was the highest number of donations from a single high school student within the Indiana-Ohio Region of Blood Services.

Keenan is a member of the LaGrange County American Red Cross Advisory Council, supporting all the services of the American Red Cross. She is also a regular blood donor and coordinates the blood drive that is held at the LaGrange County Relay for Life every June.
