LaGrange County offices will be closed December 24 and 25 for Christmas, and December 31 and January 1 for New Year’s.
Maple Wood Nature Center will be closed December 19 through January 1 for Winter Break.
Geminid meteor shower… Geminid Meteor Shower viewing will begin at 11:30 p.m. on Friday, December 13, in Dallas Lake Park. The park is located at 0505W 700S.
The Geminid meteors show promise of being a good show this year. Predictions are for 75-100 meteors per hour. Earth is passing through the dust trail of a near Earth asteroid. The moon will cause some light interference but should be low on the horizon during viewing hours.
Attendees should bring reclining chairs or a tarp and a warm wrap. Hot chocolate and coffee will be on hand. There will also be a telescope or two set up for additional viewing.
Breakfast with the Birds…
This month’s Breakfast with the Birds will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 18. The topic will be “Walking Sticks.”
A handsome wooden staff is more than an accessory for a walk in the woods. It can help pace your stride. It can steady a camera or binocular. It can even be used as a measuring stick. Indiana Master Naturalist Jim Gust will present his craft of making walking sticks.
Breakfast with the Birds is for anyone who is free a Wednesday morning of each month. The program starts with coffee and doughnuts, then a talk or discussion is offered by the naturalist. Bring binoculars and enjoy a hike in the woods afterward. A small donation to support the program is recommended.
Folk Music Jam sessions are hosted the second and fourth Sunday of the month. Jam sessions are mostly folk, country and bluegrass music with other styles thrown in from time to time.
This month’s jam will be from 1:30-5 p.m. on December 22.
Winter art class… A winter art class will be held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014. The subject will be the Northern Lights.
An experience that everyone should share is the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, over a wooded northern lake. The pulsing of the Northern Lights, the reflection in the calm water, ice creeping out from the shoreline, all add up to an unforgettable night. This winter art class is the instructor’s memory of just such a night. The lesson in acrylics is perfect for painters of all abilities.
Supplies will be provided. Participants should bring a lunch. There is a cost.
