Lady Warriors roll

Westview took control of the NECC girls basketball regular-season championship chase last Friday night with a 42-41 defeat of Fairfield in Benton.

The one-point victory improved the Lady Warriors to 7-0 in league play, a half-game better than Fairfield’s 7-1 mark.

Grace Hales poured in 18 points to pace Westview. Brooke Yoder chipped in 10 markers. Kristen Duff pulled down seven rebounds, Maria McCoy snagged six boards and blocked two shots, and Sidney Byrkett dealt out four assists.

Jenna Kieper led the Lady Falcons with 11 points.

Coach Randy Yoder’s Lady Warriors strengthened its grip on the conference lead Saturday night by drubbing Eastside, 55-29 in Emma.

Already leading 14-6 after one period, Westview went on a 16-4 tear in the second to open up a 30-10 halftime advantage. A 15-8 surge in the third period boosted the difference to 45-18.

Yoder knocked down a trio of three-point shots on her way to a team-high 16 markers for the Lady Warriors. McCoy tallied 13 points to go with her 11 rebounds and two blocked shots. Hales pitched in 10 points, Duff collected six boards and three steals, and both Byrkett and Kaitlyn Warren delivered four assists.

Netting seven points for Eastside was Kaci Shook.

Westview now stands 8-0 in NECC play and 14-3 overall. The Lady Warriors will clinch the league title with wins over Hamilton (Monday) and West Noble (Friday).
