Lady Warriors Fall

KiLee Knafel poured in 36 points in sparking Wawasee to a 60-51 victory over visiting Westview last Friday night in the varsity girls basketball opener for both schools.

Knafel, a 5-7 junior, netted 25 of her 36 markers in the first half, helping the host Lady Warriors build a 29-17 edge at the intermission. Nine of those points came on a trio of three-point baskets.

Westview did a better job on Knafel in the second half, only to have several of her teammates step up to quell any Westview comeback hopes. Among those was 5-5 junior Cassie Martinez, who sank 13 points after the break, including nine on three long-range shots.

“It seemed like every time we’d get in position to make a run at them, Wawasee would hit a big shot,” said Westview coach Randy Yoder. “I was pleased with the effort our girls gave tonight, however. We attacked the basket much better in the second half and took care of the ball.”

Skyler Carpenter topped the Westview scoresheet with 23 points. The 5-7 senior also snagged a team-high 11 rebounds.

Classmate Jeslyn Zimmerly finished with 12 points. Sophomores Brooke Yoder and Amber Roth each had four assists.

Westview again took to the road again Saturday night and was dealt a 70-18 thumping by Elkhart Memorial.

Monica Jones had 19 points for the Lady Chargers, who out scored Westview, 39-4 in the second half.

Carpenter paced the Lady Warriors with seven points.
