Lady Warriors down Lakeland

Westview overcame a sluggish start and a scrappy Lakeland squad to post a 40-27 triumph over its county rival in Emma last Thursday evening.

The Lady Lakers scored the final 11 points of the second quarter to seize a 17-10 halftime edge. Baskets by Lexie Myers and Kaity Sams early in the third period upped the Lakeland margin to 11 (21-10).

“The first 20 minutes were very embarrassing, I knew it and the kids knew it,” stated Lady Warrior coach Randy Yoder. “We didn’t play with and pride or emotion.”

To get his players going, Yoder ordered a half-court trapping defense to turn up the heat on the Lakeland ball handlers. The result was a 12-point run to end the third stanza, earning the hosts a 22-21 lead.

“Westview’s adjustments in the second half turned the tide,” said Lady Laker skipper Kati Todd. “They began to turn us over and hit their shots.”

Ashtin Kaminer’s deuce at the start of the fourth quarter put Lakeland back in the lead, 23-22. But the Lady Warriors, behind the defense of Skyler Carpenter and a couple of three-point shots from Brooke Yoder, tallied 18 of the next 20 markers to salt away their third NECC victory and fifth overall.

Both Carpenter and Yoder wound up with 11 points to pace Westview. Kamiber and Lauren McKibben topped the Lakeland scoresheet with eight markers apiece.
