A fatal crash involving a vehicle and a bicyclist Thursday morning ended in the arrest of a Kendallville man, charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
According to the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department, officers were called to the area of 4685W 700S early Thursday morning for a crash involving a bicyclist.
Officers arrived at the scene and found the cyclist, Wilmer L. Herschberger, 29, deceased due to injuries sustained in the accident. The investigation found that both the vehicle and the bicycle were westbound on CR 700S, approximately a mile from Topeka.
Officers were notified that the vehicle had driven away from the crash, and did not stop to render aid to the cyclist or contact emergency personnel.
Officers did a sweep of factories in Topeka and found a vehicle that matched the description of a van described by a witness as involved in the hit-and-run. The van reportedly had damage that would be consistent with the crash, the report noted.
Officers made contact with the owner of the van, Zane E. Scott, 28, at his place of employment. Scott was taken to the LaGrange County Jail on preliminary charges of Leaving the Scene of a Fatality Accident and Reckless Homicide.
