June health and well-being programs

Athletic physicals for middle and high school students will be given from 6-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4, at Parkview LaGrange Hospital. There is a fee.

Student athletes are invited to take advantage of these low cost pre-participation physicals (PPEs). Forms are available from the school’s athletic director and must be completed in full prior to receiving service. The student’s parent or legal guardian must sign all authorizations. Services provided at the event include:

·     Physical exam by a physician

·     Musculoskeletal assessment

·     Height and weight

·     Blood pressure assessment

·     Snellen eye chart exam

·     Medical history review

EKGs (heart screening) will also be available.

The event, sponsored by Parkview LaGrange Hospital, Parkview Physicians Group and Lakeland Athletic Corporation, is open to any student in middle school or high school in LaGrange County and the surrounding area. To obtain copies of the forms to be completed, contact the student’s athletic director.

Walking event…

Wellness Wednesdays on the Parkview LaGrange Campuswill be held from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. every Wednesday beginning June 4 and continuing through September 3.

Join friends and neighbors on Wednesdays this summer to walk the track at Parkview LaGrange Hospital. Participants are encouraged to walk two miles each Wednesday (four laps around the hospital’s walking track). The first 30 people who complete 10 Wellness Wednesday walks out of the 14-week event will receive a free t-shirt. A table will be set up inside the hospital’s main lobby from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. for Wellness Wednesday registration and weekly sign-in.

Twice a day, on the second Wednesday of the month, Parkview LaGrange Hospital Rehab staff will provide stretching and resistance exercise demonstrations using the exercise equipment on the hospital’s walking track.

Laugh Yoga…

Are you a Parkview LaGrange Senior Club member age 55 or older who was born in April, May or June? This celebration is for you! Are you a Senior Club member who was not born in those months? Join us anyway!

Brad Harris, vice president of Healthcare Development for Miller's Merry Manors and certified Laugh Yoga instructor, will share the health benefits of laughter at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10, in Parkview LaGrange Hospital’s Terrace Café. Attendees will learn firsthand how laughter can reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve quality of life.

This program is free of charge and refreshments will be served. Reservations are recommended but not required. To reserve a spot, call (260) 463-9009.


Wellness on the Road…

Stroh Days will be the next stop in Parkview LaGrange Hospital’s “Wellness on the Road” travelling health fair series. Stop in at the Stroh Fire Department from 8-10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, to take advantage of low-cost blood tests. Payment may be made by cash or check at the time of service.

Participants will also have the opportunity to talk with the hospital’s diabetes education staff. Learn tips for healthy eating, activity, medications, monitoring, healthy coping, reducing risks of medical complications and more. 

The low-cost blood tests include:

·     CHEM-17 – An 8-12 hour fast is required for this blood test. If you are diabetic you should continue your normal therapy schedule.

·     Hemogram – Anemia/iron screening.

·     A1c – Diabetes screen.

·     TSH – Thyroid screen

·     PSA – Prostate screen

·     Ultrasensitive CRP – Detects early heart disease.

·     Vitamin D – Measures vitamin D deficiency

This Wellness on the Road program, “Diabetes and Low Cost Blood Tests,” will be repeated at Parkview LaGrange Hospital on August 28 and at the Michiana Event Center in Howe on October 14.
